While the outstanding wages have been paid, the miners have other demands including independent status and the restoration of subsidies withdrawn in December

On Tuesday 9 January around 6 thousand miners from the state mining division “Donbas” went on strike. The division includes three mines: “Komunarsksa”, “Shcheglovska” and Hlyboka”. According to the head of the independent trade union of “Donbas” miners Valery Bohatishchev, the strike began at 9 a.m. with the beginning of the morning shift.

Mr  Bohatishchev said that in actual fact the miners had begun a strike on 30 December 2006. However after the Minister of the Coal Industry acceded to their demand to immediately pay the wages owed (at least 8 million UH), the strike had been suspended.

He added that the miners were also demanding that the Ministry approve the independent status of the mines (not joining them to “Makivuhillya” as the Minister is planning), and also the repayment of the bank loan which the mining division took out with state guarantees. Mr Bohatishchev pointed out also that in December the mining division had lawful state subsidies worth 1.7 million UH removed.

The miners decided to resume their strike since the other demands were not met. During the strike only work required for maintaining the mines in working order will be carried out.
