In the Donbas area the mortality rate is far outstripping new births
Over the first three months of 2007 the death rate was 250-300% higher than the rate of births in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Luhansk and Kirovohrad regions. These results were presented by the press service of the Ministry of Justice.
It added that the mortality rate in Ukraine continued to exceed births, with the ration on average around the country standing at 1:1.7.
The best situation is in the Transcarpathian region where the numbers of births and deaths over recent years have remained relatively comparable (from the beginning of the year 3,449 babies were born against 3,681 deaths).
Other results reported included a growing trend towards entering into marriage, and the number of divorces was also reported to be falling.
