Ukraine once again in US list of countries with a high number of human trafficking victims

The US State Department’s annual report on human trafficking around the world puts Ukraine on its list of countries with a considerable number of victims of human trafficking.

It states that “Ukraine does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so”.

The report points out that “In 2006, the Border Guards closed nine channels of trafficking, prevented 43 women from being trafficked, and detained 29 traffickers”.

Ukraine however comes in for criticism especially over measures to protect victims and prosecute traffickers.

For example, of 86 traffickers prosecuted and convicted in 2006, 47 received suspended sentences.

As a result, the country is placed on the list of those requiring special attention due to inadequate efforts against trafficking. As soon as these efforts increase, it will receive a higher rating. If, however, it does not heighten its efforts, then according to US legislation, this can adversely affect US aid to the country.

The US Embassy is presently working with the Ukrainian government on combating human trafficking and says that the US is prepared to help Ukraine in complying with standards in this area.
