The Kalashnikov case at the European Court
On Thursday 12 July at 11.15, there will be a formal announcement outside the Prosecutor Generals Office of the intention to file an application with the European Court of Human Rights over the attack by National Deputy Oleh Kalashnikov on a filming crew from TV Channel STB..
Those addressing the picket will include journalist and victim of the assault Margarita Sytnyk, the Director of the Media Law Institute Taras Shevchenko who will be representing the claimants in Strasbourg and Yehor Sobolev, head of the civic organization “For professional journalism” which is initiating the court suit.
The announcement will be during the course of a picket by journalists of the Prosecutor Generals Office organized by the Kyiv Independent Media Trade Union.
The picket will be taking place exactly a year since the attack by Kalashnikov of a cameraman and journalist outside the Verkhovna Rada.
As we reported here, the Prosecutor General announced last week that he had not found sufficient evidence for criminal proceedings against Kalashnikov. The organization “For professional journalism” calls on all journalists to come and express their view of such an “investigation”.
