Russia falls behind Ukraine on corruption

Not that Ukraine has anything to boast about, having taken 118th place (with 2.7 points) out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index.  Russia shared 143rd place with Indonesia, Gambia and Toro.  It was in 121st position last year.

The top three places were held by Denmark, Finland and New Zealand.  The three worst countries for corruption were Iraq, Myanmar and Somalia.

The rating is drawn up from responses of businesspeople and independent experts, on a scale of 0 (most corrupt) to 10 (least).

Of the former Soviet republics the best score went to Estonia (28th position with a score of 6.5). Five republics got scores worse than Russia – Kazakhstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.
