Ecuador recognizes Holodomor as an act of genocide

Ecuador has thus become the second Latin American country after Peru whose highest legislative body has recognized Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.

On 30 October 2007 the National Congress of Ecuador passed a Resolution acknowledging Holodomor 1932-1933 to have been an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. The Resolution was voted for by 63 of the 64 parliamentarians present.

The Ecuadorian parliament also expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people in marking the 75th anniversary of Holodomor.  It pointed to the need for the principles of justice, freedom, democracy and mutual respect to be the basis of relations between nations so that such tragedies as Holodomor in Ukraine are never repeated. It also condemned violations of human rights in any form.

In the official notification of the adoption of the Resolution which is placed on the National Congress’ website at: (http://congreso.gov.ec/noticias/contenido.aspx?codigo_bol=5542&sitio=noticias), Holodomor 1932-1933 is called a “most terrible weapon of mass extermination”. .
