On 2 November a memorial service [panykhyda] and gathering will be held to honour the 1111 prisoners of Solovky shot at the Sandarmokh Clearing (Karelia) on 27 October and 2-4 November 1937.

It has been organized by members of the public and the President is expected to take part.

Members of the press and all people of good will are invited to attend.   If you cannot attend, please light a candle in memory and in the fervent hope that this will never ever happen again

The Sandarmokh Clearing holds the unmarked graves of thousands of victims of the Terror.  During those days, 1111 prisoners were killed in accordance with a “quota”.

Among the 290 Ukrainian victims were the creator of the theatre “Berezil” [“March”] Les Kurbas; the playwright Mykola Kulish, the poet Mykola Zerov, and many other artists, scientists and public figures.

In the Sandarmokh Clearing the memorials to the victims of the Terror include a granite Cossack Cross with the inscription “To the slaughtered sons and daughters of Ukraine”
