Mikhail Gangan remanded in custody

A Vinnytsa court has allowed the police application to hold Mikhail Gangan, the activist from the National Bolshevik Party, which is banned in Russia.  The detention is for 40 days while the issue of Gangan’s possible extradition to Russia is considered.

As reported here, Mikhail Gangan arrived in Ukraine on 10 December, and according to information from the Vinnytsa Human Rights Group applied to the UN High Commission for Refugees for assistance in receiving refugee status.  The Vinnytsa Group have expressed concern that this application was not submitted to the court until after the warrant to hold Gangan for 40 days.

While the fact of this application in theory means that the procedure for seeking refugee status has begun, members of the Vinnytsa Human Rights Group are concerned that Gangan could be handed over to the Russian authorities.
