Drug abuse has risen significantly over the last five years
There has been a considerable increase in the number of drug addicts in Ukraine over the past five years. Whereas in 2003, there were 119 thousand addicts registered, the figure now stands at 173 thousand, with five thousand minors among these.
The figures were reported at an extended meeting held at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and attended by President Yushchenko.
The worst figures are in the Mykolaiv region where there are 71 addicts for every 10 thousand head of population; then the Luhansk region – 67 per 10 thousand; Odessa region – 65 and the Dnipropetrovsk region – 62.
The Lviv region has 20 addicts per 10 thousand. The lowest figures are in the Transcarpathian region – 7 per 10 thousand.
Last year Internal Affairs bodies uncovered almost 4.7 thousand cases of abuse of medicines with controlled substances, especially tramadol. 1.5 thousand criminal investigations were initiated over these. 1.8 million doses of medical substances were removed from circulation, including 763 thousand of tramadol.
The National Council on Health Issues reports that 40 thousand people die each year in Ukraine from alcoholism. According to a survey carried out by the World Health Organization, Ukraine has the worlds highest rate of adolescent alcohol consumption. From material published at www.zakhid.net
