Anastasia Baburova, shot on Monday by the killer of Stanislav Markelov, has died. She never regained consciousness.  She was 25 years old.

Dmitry Muratov, Chief Editor of Novaya Gazeta, which Nastya worked for, while in her fifth year of journalism studies, stated this evening that there are two versions of the shooting. Either the killer shot at Nastya after she tried to stop him fleeing the scene after killing Stanislav Markelov, or her death was also deliberate.

He added that just a couple of hours before the killing, Anastasia Baburova had taken a very detailed interview of Markelov regarding all his cases. “We were able to get hold of the flash drive with this interview and we will definitely publish it”, he said.

Investigators have already obtained CCC camera footage of the likely killer which specialists will be processing.

Novaya Gazeta is calling on all those who may have seen anything to contact them at the editorial office.
