Switzerland to help Ukrainian young people avoid modern slavery

Switzerland is to spend 1 million 300 thousand Swiss Francs on fighting human trafficking. The project which is aimed at fighting human trafficking through social work and mobilization of communities will be run in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Donetsk regions, as well as in the Crimea. It is these regions which are seeing the greatest number of victims of human trafficking.
The focus will be on young people who through their lack of knowledge most often end up in the clutches of slave traffickers, Olena Kalibaba from the Charity “Children’s Wellbeing” explains. She says that specialists from the project together with social workers, teachers from small towns, villages, district youth centres, will be developing a method plan for teaching young people how to avoid falling victim to human traffickers. “Children finish village schools and don’t know what to do next. It’s good that some go to study in institutes or vocational colleges. However not all do, and agencies which recruit people to work abroad are interested in such areas because information is not widespread there and it’s easy to work with such an audience.”
100 thousand Ukrainian victims of human trafficking
The project will work for three years. Later the experience of informing school students about human trafficking will be extended to other regions of Ukraine. As reported here already, the International Organization for Migration [IOM] estimates that 100 thousand Ukrainians have already been victims of human trafficking. Most of the victims are from small towns and villages.
