Last farewell to Natalya Estemirova in Grozny

A ceremony to bid farewell to the Russian human rights defender Natalya Estemirova, abducted and murdered yesterday, has taken place in the centre of Grozny, on Journalist Square, by a memorial to journalists killed, opposite the “Memorial” office where Natalya worked.

RIA Novosti reports that there were about 100 people, journalists, human rights activists and colleagues, as well as people whom Natalya Estemirova had helped.

Following the ceremony, a procession formed which accompanied the car with Natalya’s body, from Journalist Square down the main street in Grozny – Putin Avenue – to the Assembly Mosque “Heart of Chechnya”.

There were no speeches during the ceremony - all those gathered were in tears. At the memorial to journalists killed, a photograph of Natalya Estemirova was hung, and a banner asking “Who is next?”

From Grozny Natalya’s body will be taken to the village of Ishkha-Yurt where the funeral will take place. She will be buried in the Koshkeldy village cemetery next to her father’s grave.
