The Women’s Human Rights Centre “La Strada – Ukraine” has begun an Internet hotline at www.internetbezpeka.org.ua as part of a number of measures within the programme “Understanding and acting together against the sexual exploitation of children”. This initiative involves not only civic organizations, but also official structures helping to fight against child sex tourism.

With this Internet hotline, Ukrainians coming upon child pornography in the Internet can provide notification which will be passed on to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to Svitlana Kolesnikova, Manager of the Child Protection Programme at La Strada – Ukraine, this hotline is merely the beginning. “The hotline will start, we will begin to cooperate with Internet providers, will decide how to react, possibly boycotting some sites.” La Strada is convinced that such a resource has long been needed. The software for it has been created like for similar lines functioning in other European countries.

The opening of the hotline was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Ms Kolesnikova says that at the beginning of this year, La Strada – Ukraine submitted proposals to the National Action Plan for Implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, however the Plan has yet to be approved.
