Kadyrov to recall his law suits against human rights defenders

10.02.2010
The reason given is that Kadyrov’s mother has urged her son to not continue his court battle with the human rights defenders Oleg Orlov and Ludmila Alexeeva due to their advanced age. Oleg Orlov suggests another reason

Interfax reported on 9 February, quoting Chechen President Kadyrov’s Press Secretary, that Kadyrov has decided to halt all legal action against the human rights defenders. The reason given is that Kadyrov’s mother, Aimani, has emphatically urged her son to not continue his court battle with the human rights defenders Oleg Orlov from Memorial and Ludmila Alexeeva, the Head of the Moscow Human Rights Group, taking into account their advanced age.

Oleg Orlov told Interfax that Kadyrov’s decision had been forced on him. “It was absolutely clear that the criminal case against me had to be terminated for lack of elements of a crime. The Central Department of the Moscow Police obviously didn’t want to launch criminal proceedings against Ludmila Alexeeva (who is over 80 – translator). They found a face-saving way out of the situation that Mr Kadyrov had got into. It’s possible he was advised to do so by Moscow”.
