Warmest congratulations to Anna Yudkivska, newly elected European Court Judge!
On 27 April 2010 the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) elected Anna Yudkivska as judge to the European Court of Human Rights with respect to Ukraine.
Anna Yudkivska received an absolute majority of the votes cast and has been elected for a term of six years. When Protocol 14 of the European Convention of Human Rights comes into force on 1 June 2010, this term of office will be extended ipso jure to a period of nine years.
A lot could be said about the rather tortured saga of Ukraine’s candidate list for this position but not today after a choice which has decisively shunned all politicization of this vital post.
This is excellent news for Ukraine and we join all those who know and value Anna Yudkivska as a wonderful lawyer and human rights defender in wishing her well in her new position.
