In an open appeal addressed to the President, the Head of the environmental NGO “Pechenihy”, Serhiy Shaparenko, has stressed the importance to Kharkiv residents of their Park and the need to consider public opinion. The appeal explains that for over a week Kharkiv residents have been defending their Park from their own City Council, with the world following the events. Kharkiv’s central park was created before the Revolution and is known and loved by all Kharkiv residents, and the decision to build a road through it, the appeal reads, could not fail to shock them. For this reason hundreds have come out in defence of the Park, and many have stood vigil at the area of felling. The appeal explains events reported here during the week and stresses that via the Internet and media outlets these have been seen throughout the world. It mentions a picket held recently in New York outside the Ukrainian Embassy in defence of the Park. Can Euro-2012 really justify the destruction of such an object of State and public importance as the Children’s Railway, through which the authorities plans to build a four-lane road? The open calls on the President to help protect the Park and stop the destruction of trees and construction work. Kharkiv residents want and need their park.
