Belarusian authorities block social networks

19.12.2010

A correspondent from the Internet Publication Ukrainska Pravda reports that in Minsk all social networks which were being used to coordinate protest against the expected rigging of the presidential elections have been disconnected.

The correspondent has learned that the following are unavailable: Facebook, twitter, YouTube, gmail, as well as virtually all email servers and LiveJournal. The sits of some of the opposition candidates have been stopped.

He points out that the only provider is Beltelecom which controls the entire Internet flow in the country.”

On 19 December presidential elections are taking place.

Belarus opposition figures living now in Ukraine today addressed an appeal to Ukrainians calling on them to remember how they defended their democratic rights in 2004, and to show solidarity with Belarusians.

They also ask the Ukrainian media to cover the protests in Minsk planned on the central October Square.
