Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karl Bildt considers unacceptable the ban of the leader of the Batkivshchyna Party, Yulia Tymoshenko, travelling to Brussels. Mr Bildt was speaking with an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels during a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Association of European democrat students.

“The fact that she was prohibited from coming is of course unacceptable”, he said. “That would be impossible in any European country in those conditions which I can see”.

He added that Europe has “serious questions” to the authorities over the case against Yulia Tymoshenko and has made this quite clear to those in power.

He said that he had great suspicions regarding political grounds in the case against Tymoshenko.

This comes a day after strong statements were issued on behalf of EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele and the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek.

The Prosecutor General’s Office explained the prohibition as being due to scheduled investigative work as well as operational data suggesting that Tymoshenko intended to use the trip abroad to leave Ukraine and avoid the criminal investigation.
