Czech court prohibits extradition of Danylyshyn to Ukraine

The City Court in Prague has ruled that it would be inadmissible to extradite Bohdan Danylyshyn, Economy Minister in Yulia Tymoshenko’s Government, to Ukraine as demanded by the Ukrainian authorities.

This ruling confirms that the political asylum granted Danylyshyn on 13 January this year cannot be revoked.   Marina Maxkhitkova, Danylyshyn’s lawyer stressed that this was in full accord with the provision in the Czech Criminal Code which prohibits extradition of a person who has received asylum or international protection.

A warrant for Danylyshyn was issued in August and he was arrested by the Czech authorities 18 October 2010 and held in custody until 14 January this year. He was released following the granting of asylum.

The Ukrainian authorities continued to demand his extradition.  He is one of the growing number of members of Yulia Tymoshenko’s government whom the present regime accuses of misuse of power.
