PACE co-rapporteurs express concern at Tymoshenko sentence
Strasbourg, 11.10.2011 – The co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Ukraine by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin (Sweden, EPP/CD), have expressed their concern and disappointment at the sentence passed on Yulia Tymoshenko today.
“This is an example of the criminalisation of political decision-taking. Moreover, at the last session, the Monitoring Committee already highlighted the systemic shortcomings and weaknesses that have marred the trials of former government members, ” the co-rapporteurs said.
“In our view, this is unacceptable and must be addressed by the authorities. It again underlines the need to fully reform the criminal justice system in Ukraine, in line with PACE recommendations on the justice and court system. Criminal justice reforms must include the principle of decriminalisation of political decisions.”
They concluded: “We intend to raise this issue at the highest level during our forthcoming visit to Kyiv from 2 to 4 November 2011.”
