Tymoshenko presented with new charges in SIZO cell

Former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Batkivshchyna Party was on Thursday presented with charges under new criminal investigations undertaken by the Tax Service. According to Serhiy Vlasenko, MP and one of her defence lawyers, he took part in the “investigative activities” in the SIZO [detention centre] where she is being held.

He also says that her state of health is such that she cannot move by herself, and is not walking.  He says that she told the investigator that she could not take part in any “investigative activities” because she was feeling very ill and had back pain. He asserts that despite having the relevant medical assessment from both Health Ministry doctors and SIZO medical staff, the investigator continued regardless.

“This involves a case which was unlawfully revived on the basis of a decision by Prosecutor General Pshonka, in spite of a ruling from the Supreme Court, which cancelled the termination of criminal investigations closed back in 2004-2005”.

He asserts that the Prosecutor General does not want “to get his fingers dirty” and has got the tax inspectorate to take this case on.

As reported, police have re-started four criminal investigations over the activities of the company United Energy Systems of Ukraine in 1996-1997 (Yulia Tymoshenko figures in all four investigations.  The charges are all about alleged tax evasion.
