Komorowski in Kyiv calls for Tymoshenko’s release

The reports in Polish at Wyborcza and in Ukrainian at Interfax – Ukraine are somewhat different in tone, though the substance is roughly the same.  The Polish source states that President Komorowski said that if Ukraine wants to continue moving closer to Europe, it must free the former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. He suggested, Wyborcza says, that without her release, it will not be possible to sign the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and called for a swift change to the law in order to enable the release of the opposition leader.

Interfax-Ukraine reports that the Polish President stressed that a real solution to the situation with Tymoshenko’s imprisonment was needed, and that it should not only be used to develop relations between the EU and Ukraine.  President Komorowski was speaking after a meeting with President Yanukovych on Monday.

He apparently said that he hoped the Tymoshenko case would have a minimal effect on the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement negotiations, and that while the cases are important, there are more important cases, for example, Ukraine’s European integration.
"At the same time, we recognize that the Tymoshenko case is important and needs to be dealt with so as to enable the appropriate assessment of Ukraine in the EU”.
