Ivashchenko Trial: Detention continues as does the failure to provide proper medical treatment

15.12.2011
While the prosecution of former Acting Defence Minister in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government Valery Ivashchenko is not as high-profile as those of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yury Lutsenko, both his detention for over a year and prosecution give grounds for concern

Boris Nechyporenko who is representing former Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government, , Valery Ivashchenko, reports that his client was on Wednesday brought to the court lying down. He had been given pain-killers because of a sharp pain in his spine.  He added that Mr Ivashchenko’s had received help for three slipped disks not from SIZO Administration doctors, but from another remand prisoner. Mr Nechyporenko asserts that his client is not being provided with medication in the SIZO medical unit which does not have it, but  by his relatives at their own expense.

The Pechersky District Court in Kyiv on Wednesday postponed the next hearing until 19 December.  It again refused to change the restraint measure against the former government official, while drawing the State Penitentiary Service’s attention to his state of health.

The prosecution of the former Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government has not gained the same publicity as those of Tymoshenko and Yury Lutsenko, but remains of concern, especially since Mr Ivashchenko has been held in custody now since August 2010.  He is charged with abuse of office when in November 2009 while Acting Minister of Defence he allegedly signed a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence.
