Constitutional Court allows use of Russian and other languages in court

In a Judgement passed on 13 December 2011, and made public on Thursday, Ukraine’s Constitutional Court rules that the languages of ethnic minorities may be used in Ukrainian courts, alongside the State language.  The judgement followed a submission from 54 National Deputies [MPs].

The Court states:

"There are no grounds for finding unconstitutional the provisions of Article 12, §§ 4 and 5 of the Law on the Judicial System and the Status of Judges regarding the use of regional languages or languages of ethnic minorities in courts along with the state language, under the Law on the Ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.”
