The family of former Acting Defence Minister in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government, Valery Ivashchenko has issued a statement in which it calls on the Ukrainian public and international community to intervene and prevent Mr Ivashchenko’s physical destruction.  As reported, Valery Ivashchenko has been in detention since August 2010. His is one of the cases which the Danish Helsinki Committee and other human rights organizations have expressed concern over as indicating selective use of prosecution.

The Ivashchenko family accuses those in power of using the court and Prosecutor to do everything to physically destroy Valery Ivashchenko. They assert that he is being refused medical treatment, and say that he clearly needs treatment which can only be provided in a clinic, not in the SIZO or detention centre.

Valery Ivashchenko is charged with having, in November 2009 while Acting Minister of Defence abused his position by signing a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence.  Please see the Second Preliminary Report by the Danish Helsinki Committee on Human Rights, for a comprehensive analysis of the case.
