Credentials of Ukrainian delegation to PACE challenged

The legitimacy of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has been placed in question given the fact that three of the delegates presented as being part of the opposition BYUT faction (bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko) are in fact MPs who are now part of the ruling majority.

The following statement is from the PACE website.

The credentials of the Ukrainian delegation to the Assembly were challenged on procedural grounds on the opening day of the session in Strasbourg. Making the challenge on behalf of the EPP/CD group, Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania) considered that three members of the Ukrainian delegation should not be seen as members of the opposition and therefore the political balance of the delegation was not respected.

The Committee on Rules of Procedure should address the issue tomorrow, and the final decision by the Assembly is foreseen for Thursday morning. The new Ukrainian delegation will take its seats provisionally in the Assembly until then, with voting and speaking rights, but may not vote on its own credentials.
