Former Kharkiv Governor and opposition figure on the international wanted list
Arsen Avakov, former Governor of the Kharkiv Region, head of the Kharkiv regional branch of the Batkivshchyna Party (Tymoshenko’s party) and mayoral candidate in the seriously flawed 2010 elections has been placed on the international wanted list. This was reported on the same day that a search was carried out of his home.
The Regional Prosecutor initiated a criminal investigation against him under the by now notorious Article 365 § 3 of the Criminal Code (abuse of power and office - used in the prosecutions of Yulia Tymoshenko, Yury Lutsenko, Valery Ivashchenko and others). The report last Thursday stated that Mr Avakov is accused in connection with the disposal of 50 hectares of land
Since Mr Avakov is not in the country, his may well be the next application for political asylum.
