Man released after 8 years for crime he didn’t commit

It was reported at the end of last week that Maxim Dmytrenko had been released from Prison Colony No. 20 in the Zaporizhya region.  Mr Dmytrenko served 8 years for one of the crimes committed by the serial killer Serhiy Tkach who is presently serving a life sentence for a large number of crimes.

Maxim Dmytrenko had been convicted of the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl.

The Prosecutor General’s Office has stated that it is carrying out a criminal investigation into the murder in order to establish the identity of those who unlawfully prosecuted Mr Dmytrenko.

His sentence was revoked on 13 March.

At various times 10 people in different regions of Ukraine were convicted of the crimes committed by Tkach.  There were four people from the Zaporizhya region, including Maxim Dmytrenko.

It is not clear why the latter has only been released now.
