Situation with imprisoned ex-government leaders must be resolved before the elections
If Ukraine’s Court of Cassation does not satisfactorily resolve the issue of the imprisoned former government members, President Yanukovych should intervene politically in order to resolve the issue, according to PACE’s monitoring co-rapporteurs for Ukraine Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin (Sweden, EPP/CD).
In an information note on their recent visit to Kyiv and Kharkiv, made public yesterday during PACE’s plenary session in Strasbourg, the co-rapporteurs said the coming summer months would be “a crucial period” for solving the issue, during which the Assembly should “maintain its patience”. However, it would be “unacceptable” if the situation remained unchanged by the time of the elections.
If President Yanukovych intervenes politically to solve the case, the co-rapporteurs said they would take up his invitation to visit Kyiv on an “urgent mission” to discuss what action to take.
