It hopes that "the Ukrainian government will seize the opportunity of this clear judgement to take action that will demonstrate their intention to move closer to EU standards on rule of law and democracy

Minister for Europe David Lidington spoke following the European Court of Human Rights judgement on former Interior Minister Lutsenko.

“I welcome the European Court of Human Rights’ judgement in the case of former Ukrainian Interior Minister Lutsenko versus Ukraine.  The Court was unanimous in finding seven violations of Mr Lutsenko’s rights in the way in which he was arrested and detained by the Ukrainian authorities.

“The United Kingdom has repeatedly called on Ukraine to address EU concerns about rule of law and selective justice.  I hope that the Ukrainian government will seize the opportunity of this clear judgement to take action that will demonstrate their intention to move closer to EU standards on rule of law and democracy.  The UK will continue to call on Ukraine to ensure that the opposition is able to participate fully in free and fair parliamentary elections in October.”
