Report on the results of
Observation Mission on Human Rights situation in Kazakhstan in connection with the events of December 16, 2011 and its consequences

“This report is based on information obtained from various sources. But most important are observations of the members of the Mission. We have visited Almaty, Aktau and Zhanaozen where talked directly with witnesses and victims of the events of December 16, have been monitoring the trial of the oil industry workers, observed the forbidden rally of so-called dissenters.”

On June 19, 2012 conference “Kazakhstan: Zhanaozen tests and their implications on the credibility of the authorities. Wind of change or merely the appearance of liberalization: freedom to Vinyavskiy and Sokolov as the need to improve the image of country’s power in the world «has been held in the European Parliament in Brussels.”

The event was organized under the auspices of the MEP professor Joanna Senyszyn and Vice-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Human Rights Piotr Borys, members of the European Parliament delegation for Central Asia. In addition to MEPs at the conference was attended by Kazakh journalists, human rights activists, representatives of the OSCE monitors of the trial of oil industry workers and representatives of the Fund “Open Dialogue” (Poland).

During the conference, report on the results of Observation Mission on Human Rights situation in Kazakhstan in connection with the events of December 16, 2011 and its consequences was presented. The observation mission visited Kazakhstan on 23–30 of April 2012. It consisted of Ukrainian human rights activists and journalists: Nazariy Boyarskiy, Kostyantin Reutski, Tatiana Pechonchik, Andriy Chernousov, Elena Aschenko and Vladimir Nestorak.

As one of the conference speakers, Nazariy Boyarskiy, head of the International Observation Mission on the human rights situation in Kazakhstan (Centre for Civil Liberties, Ukraine) mentioned: “The European Community is very concerned about the massive violations of human rights in Kazakhstan. Despite the release of Igor Vinyavskiy after the issuance of a resolution by the European Parliament, such issues as respect to the right to fair trial of the oil industry workers and many other freedoms are put aside. That is why members of the European Parliament should use all possible policy instruments to improve the human rights situation in the Republic of Kazakhstan.”
