Controversy and criticism over Tymoshenko video

The State Penitentiary Service has said that it will investigate a new video which appears to show the imprisoned former Prime Minister and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko doing physical exercises in a hospital room.  The video was circulated on the Internet on 16 October.

The day before a Kharkiv court again postponed hearings into another criminal prosecution of Ms Tymoshenko on the grounds that she was not in the courtroom.  She says that back pain prevents her from moving.

Ms Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna Party has protested over the video and demanded an investigation.

On Friday the Penitentiary Service claimed that they do not keep video records of the ward where Ms Tymoshenko is being treated.

Yevhen Zakharov, Co-Chair of the Kharkiv Human Rights Group, is scathing about the video and calls it a shocking infringement of Ms Tymoshenko’s rights.

Video footage may only be shot with the person’s agreement and in this case there was no consent to the actual filming, let alone it being spread on the Internet.

It is even worse, he says, if the video is in fact a fake with there being no real proof that the person shown is Ms Tymoshenko.
