Parliamentary Committee call for intervention in Crimean conflict

The Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Inter-Ethnic Relations has called on President Yanukovych to intervene in the conflict between the Crimean government and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.

They were responding to the report that “the Mejlis has effectively been removed” from preparations for the remembrance events marking the anniversary of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar People on 17-18 May.

“We are disturbed by the plans of the Crimean authorities to make changes without agreement with the representative body of the Crimean Tatars – the Mejlis -  in the plans for remembrance events on and immediately before 18 May 2013”.

The Committee is asking Yanukovych to “take measures aimed at reinstating dialogue and fruitful cooperation between the central authorities in Ukraine, executive bodies of the Crimea with the Mejlis, Crimean Tatar civic organizations, deputies from among Crimean Tatars elected to the Crimean parliament and bodies of local self-government”.

The Committee expresses willingness to hold a meeting in the Crimea should the conflict not be resolved.

Mustafa Dzhemiliev, Head of the Mejlis and member of the parliamentary committee has warned that “the attempts by the current Crimean authorities to divide the Crimean Tatar national movement are doomed to failure.”

The Deputy Head of the Committee Andriy Shevchenko [from Batkivshchyna):

“Crimean Tatars should know that they won’t be left to face the inadequate actions of the local authorities alone. Ignoring the Mejlis appears either a huge mistake or deliberate provocation aimed at exacerbating the situation in the Crimea”.

See Provocation over Crimean Tatar Deportation anniversary for more details about the highly irresponsible actions of the local authorities and Dangerous manoeuvres in the Crimea for more information about apparent attempts to create puppet Crimean Tatar bodies, bypassing the Mejlis
