So who is defending us?

Civic organizations are demanding measures to enable easy identification of individual police officers. This is vital, they believe, in order to combat police impunity in breaking the law and infringing their rights.  They have initiated an open letter to the Minister of the Interior, Vitaly Zakharchenko asking for a system where each police officer has his or her individual sew-on badge.

The authors of the letter point out that public surveys indicate an increasing number of rights infringements by police officers who can often not be identified. At present, even if the police are in uniform, there is nothing on them to identify a particular officer.  Traffic police and local duty police are different in that they do have tokens with a code, however these still make it extremely difficult to ascertain who exactly they belong to.

All police officers do, of course, carry a police ID document,  but they are generally extremely reluctant to produce it.

Signatories thus far include the Association of Ukrainian Human Rights Monitors on Law Enforcement; the Foundation for Regional Initiatives; the Luhansk Human Rights Centre Postup and others.  The letter can be endorsed here http://umdpl.info/index.php?id=1379409316
