So who is obstructing the EU-Association Agreement?

Radio Svoboda reports Party of the Regions MPs as saying that they won’t support any of the four proposed draft laws enabling Yulia Tymoshenko to travel abroad for treatment. The opposition has stated that it will vote for any bill which is approved by the European Parliament Mission. They are calling on Pat Cox and Aleksandr Kwaśniewski to be at the parliamentary session on Thursday when the Labunska bill which would enable Tymoshenko to leave for treatment in Germany is due to be considered.

This was announced by Vitaliy Klitschko who said that the draft bill is being obstructed and had deliberately not been placed on the agenda on Tuesday.  It has now been set for Thursday and they are inviting Pat Cox and Aleksandr Kwaśniewski “so that the European representatives see who votes, who gives their vote and who proclaim one thing and does something quite different”.

The head of the Party of the Regions faction, Oleksandr Yefremov has said that they don’t see any of the four bills as having a good chance of being passed, and asserts that they “will be forced to create a working group”. .

“Perhaps something will change during these days. The situation here sometime changes quite fast”

He also claimed that the Party of the Regions position has been influenced by “information about the beginning of court proceedings against Tymoshenko in Switzerland and the USA”.

The opposition are dismissive of these legal proceedings and suggest that the Party of the Regions are trying to disrupt the signing of the Association Agreement and are looking to find somebody else to blame for the failure.

For all the attempts by the Party of the Regions, and the international law firm hired for the same purpose, the legal proceedings cannot be against Tymoshenko since the money they are endeavouring to retrieve is in accounts held by Pavlo Lazarenko (see "New Tymoshenko Case" is dreary déjà vu
