Now Travelling Docudeays UA under attack
On November 12 a film presentation within the Travelling Docudays UA festival of human rights documentaries was cancelled at the last minute in Ivano-Frankivsk. This is the third time the showings have been prevented with unconvincing reasons given.. The organizers, from the Ivano-Frankivsk regional organization Moloda Prosvita were planning to show two films: Children behind bars (Ukraine) and “Enough! To Freedom…” (Belarus, Poland).
2 hours before the schedule event, the cinema owners phoned and said that the electricity had gone off. When the organizers of the film showing arrived, they were met by closed doors and a sign saying closed for repairs. Since then the owners don’t answer their phones.
What they don’t want to show
The first film is about modern problems with juveniles and the criminal justice system in Ukraine as seen through the real stories of young people in conflict with the law. The heads of a project on reforming the juvenile justice system had come to take part in the presentation and subsequent discussion.
The second film is about the events of 19 December 2010 following the last internationally condemned presidential elections in Belarus.
