Maidan’s Defenders and First Victims

Serhiy Nihoyan, Mikhail Zhyzneuski
The parents of Serhiy Nihoyan, who was killed by several bullet wounds to the head and face on Wednesday morning, had sought refuge in Ukraine because of the violence over Nagorno-Karabakh. Mikhail Zhyzneuski, a Belarusian national, had lived in Ukraine for about 10 years after fleeing persecution at home. In Ukraine he was active in the extreme nationalist UNA-UNSO movement.
Five people are reported dead, and countless injured as Yanukovych’s regime appears to be using snipers against protesters, and telling monstrous lies about the protest on Maidan and Hrushevsky St.
Through Wednesday evening and well into the night, large numbers of people, including many women could be seen sweeping snow into sacks, stacking them up together with car tires, furniture, and more
Serhiy Nihoyan was 21, from a village near Dnipropetrovsk. He was his parents’ only son, and his father had pleaded with him to return from Maidan where he took part in the self-defence measures.
Please watch Serhiy in a video entitled Our Shevchenko
The poem is “The Caucuses:” and the following a translation given at Radio Liberty
And glory, freedom’s knights, to you,
Whom God will not forsake.
Keep fighting -- you are sure to win!
God helps you in your fight!
For fame and freedom march with you,
And right is on your side
