Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has demanded an explanation from Moscow on how Ukrainian military pilot Nadezhda Savchenko who was abducted by Kremlin-backed militants on June 20 came to be in a Russian SIZO [detention unit]

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has demanded an explanation from Moscow on how Ukrainian military pilot Nadezhda Savchenko came to be in a Russian SIZO [detention unit].  Ms Savchenko had earlier been abducted by Kremlin-backed militants who clearly took her to Russia.  She is now being held in Voronezh

In its statement, the ministry expresses its strong protest over Savchenko having been illegally taken to Russia. It calls this yet more proof that the terrorists are planning and carrying out their crimes in Ukraine in close cooperation with Russia’s security service.

“By abducting Ukrainian nationals in Ukraine, Russia is not only in breach of all international legal norms, but has also overstepped fundamental principles of decency and morality.”

Kyiv demands information about how Savchenko came to be taken to Russia and that those responsible be brought to justice.

It calls on Russia to release her without any conditions and on the international community to put pressure on Russia’s leaders since their sense of impunity is becoming a serious threat to the civilized world.

Savchenko was captured by militants from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic on June 20.
