Jewish community outrage over attack on Muslim cemetery

11.02.2008

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine has issued a statement over the attack in the early hours of Sunday morning on the central Muslim cemetery of the Nizhnyohirske settlement in the Crimea, during which over 220 gravestones were destroyed.  It reads: “Actions on such a scale show that this attack was carefully planned.

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine extends its deep sympathy to the Muslims of the Crimea, especially to those people whose relatives are buried in the graveyard of the Nizhnyohirske Settlement. There can be no justification for the vandals. The desecration of graves is an act of sacrilege against all that is dear to each religious, cultured individual. It fills us with indignation and pain to see such outrages committed in Ukraine.

Unfortunately over recent years vandalism at Ukrainian cemeteries has become a serious problem for society. Nor regrettably are the law enforcement agencies always efficient in reacting to such incidents. We call on all religious bodies in the country, all faiths represented in Ukraine, to present a united front against barbarians, against those who do not balk at the most vile methods in their attempts to destroy inter-ethnic and inter-faith peace in our country.

We express our support for the Mejilis of the Crimean Tatar People in their appeal to the authorities of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea and hope that those guilty of this terrible outrage will be found and suitably punished. “
