Ukraine paying for infringements established by the European Court of Human Rights

Ukrainians are increasingly turning to the European Court of Human Rights for justice and being awarded fair amounts in compensation.  According to the Deputy Minister of Justice, Valeria Lutkovska, the figure paid out so far this year is five million UAH, which the government pays without delay.

In the majority of cases applicants seek just satisfaction with compensation ranging from 600 to two and a half million dollars. The latter is thus far the largest amount of compensation which the government must pay by the end of December to an international company which won a case against Ukraine in Strasbourg.  “For paying out compensation, 26 million UAH was set aside in the 2008 budget. Now the judgment has been issued in the case of “Reget v. Ukraine”, and we need to pay a fairly large sum. There is at present an issue with changing UAH into foreign currency, and due to the penalties Ukraine certainly wants to avoid missing the payment deadline.”, Ms Lutkovska explains. She also mentioned that Ukrainians most over apply to the European Court of Human Rights over non-enforcement of rulings in domestic courts.
