Families of Beslan

The ephemeral nature of the human memory of bad things is a positive acquisition in the process of evolution. However there are occasions when this ceases to be a blessing. When, for example, remembering the terrible and tragic means that we learn lessons and try to avoid it happening again. Beslan is such a memory. It is exactly five years this week since the tragedy which shocked the world. In those years the world has come to, Beslan and those who were voluntary or involuntary participants in the events have not. There are also those so moved by the taking of hostages during the school opening ceremony [“the First Bell” – a special event for the children and their families, hence the number of people at school that day – translator], their 52 hours of horror and the death of 333 people, including 186 children, that they remember, empathize and help those who suffered to this day. Among them is the Russian photographer Maxim Mahmur who has taken on the task of creating a remembrance album for the victims of the Beslan tragedy.
