A press conference on 11 November will address the the plight of three Odessa region villagers who were forced by police officers across the border between Ukraine and Trans-Dniester and arrested by the Trans-Dniester authorities for a crime they did not commit

A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, 11 November, to highlight the plight of three residents of the village of Samiylivka in the Odessa region. The Ukrainians were forced by police officers to cross the State border between Ukraine and Trans-Dniester where they were unlawfully arrested by the Trans-Dniester authorities for a crime they did not commit.

Ukrainian journalists and human rights activists from the Civic Encouragement Movement, with help from Amnesty International in Moldova and financial support from the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union have carried out their own journalist investigation.

The Prosecutor’s office for the Odessa region has found the police action to have been unlawful and a decision is being taken on initiating a criminal investigation.

The three Ukrainian nationals – Ihor Koval, Roman Hotko and Yury Bondarenko – are presently being held in inhuman conditions in the SIZO [remand unit] of the Grygoriopolsk District Police Station in Trans-Dniester. Despite demands from the defendants, their defenders, lawyers and relatives, Ukrainian lawyers are not being permitted by the Grygoriopolsk judges to defend the men.

Ukraine is not defending its citizens: the men’s relatives and lawyers have turned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President, the Human Rights Ombudsperson, however there has been no response.

The men being help in Grygoriopol have decided to lodge an application with the European Court of Human Rights against three States – Ukraine, Moldova and Russia.
