Kharkiv City Council to seek bans on protests outside Tymoshenko trial

The Kharkiv City Council’s Executive Committee will be asking the court to ban the protests planned for 19 April outside the Kharkiv Court of Appeal where the case against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko will be heard

Opposition protests, , according to the Kharkiv authorities, block normal life in Kharkiv and affect the main routes of the city.  They supposedly prevent Kharkiv residents getting to and from work. .

The Kharkiv City Council’s Executive Committee will be asking the court to ban the protests planned for 19 April outside the Kharkiv Court of Appeal where the case against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko will be heard.  That case is over alleged embezzlement involving the United Energy Systems of Ukraine [UESU] Corporation. It was initiated in the days which followed Ms Tymoshenko’s sentencing over the gas deals and vehement protest from all democratic countries.

The Kharkiv City Council’s decision was taken on Wednesday after a discussion on the notifications of planned mass-scale protests submitted by the Batkivshchyna Party.

Yulia Tymoshenko is now accused of organizing concealment of foreign currency profit of over 155 million USD; illegal compensation with public funding and tax evasion amounting to over 47 million UAH through financial machinations.  All charges involve United Energy Systems of Ukraine.
