Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite was the first President to be allowed to visit imprisoned former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko on Friday. After her visit she told journalists that Europe’s trust in Ukraine is diminishing. She said that there was a chance to rectify the difficult situation, but that it was up to the Ukrainian people to decide whether or not to take this chance, whether to choose moves leading to closer ties with Europe or isolation.

"Yulia Tymoshenko] is in good condition, considering that she’s now recovering from a 20-day hunger strike, "  President Grybauskaite said, "Her mood is positive and optimistic. She did not complain about anything. On the contrary, she is glad that doctors are finally taking proper care of her."
Ms Tymoshenko was moved to the hospital on 9 May where she is being treated under the supervision of a German neurologist.
President Grybauskaite said that due to delay in reforms, Ukraine’s EU prospects were becoming increasingly blurred. She stressed that swift and unequivocal decisions from Ukraine were needed in order to ensure future cooperation and mutual confidence. Legal reform, putting aside the relics of the Soviet repressive laws was vital.

Ukraine’s European prospects will depend on such factors as ensuring that Yulia Tymoshenko receives adequate medical treatment,  treatment of imprisoned opposition leaders, respect for human rights, and implementation of internal reforms.
