The Donetsk Regional Administration has reported that the Donetsk Regional Children and Youth Centre in Donetsk has been seized after it refused to accept control by the Kremlin-backed militants’ self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

According to a spokesperson, Lilia Zolkina on Wednesday and Thursday people turned up at the Centre which is a non-school-based educational centre.  They demanded that the Centre come under DPR subordination and claimed to have the money for its upkeep.  They took financial documents away, changed the locks and sealed the building.

The staff, she says, were able to collect their personal belongings only, and could not rescue the Centre’s equipment and other property.

The DPR militants warned that they would be in touch in a few days and if the director refuses to come under their subordination, the Centre’s management will be changed.

Zolkina says that despite this, the Centre is continuing its work and the regional administration has provided its staff with temporary offices.

The Donetsk Regional Children and Youth Centre was created in 2008  by the Regional Council.  It provides children and young people with distance non-school-related education in the humanitarian sphere.
