Railway bridge blown up in Kharkiv oblast

01.07.2014

There were two explosions on the tracks of a railway bridge near the village of Zeleny Kolodyzm in the Kharkiv oblast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The explosions happened at 2.11, and were noticed around 2.40 by the driver of the Alder – Kyiv train.  It was only thanks to his being so alert that an accident involving a passenger train was averted.

The police arrived with sniffer dogs and a terrorist investigation is underway.

These are not the first terrorist attacks almost certain carried out by Kremlin-backed militants.

A bomb blast damaged a railway bridge in the Zaporizhya oblast during the early hours of June 24, and there were also two explosions on the railways in the Luhansk oblast on June 27  The route chosen in Zaporizhya is one used for military supplies, and is the shortest way for servicemen to be brought to Donetsk from Berdyansk.

As reported, Dmitry Tymchuk from the Centre for Military and Political Research in Kyiv believes that militants are likely to use such tactics to divert attention from Donbas.  The problem he and other analysts note is the difficulty of fighting such terrorism since it’s hard to follow the small groups able to carry it off.

There have also been other attempts by militants during the so-called ceasefire to cause trouble in the Kharkiv region.
