Ukrainians will gather and light candles in memory of the slain journalist and human rights defender on Tuesday 10 October in Kyiv.

Anna Politkovskaya’s Ukrainian friends express their deepest sympathy to her family and call on all those mourning the murdered journalist to come on Tuesday to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Kyiv and light candles in her memory.

“No decent person can fail to be affected by the murder of Anna Politkovskaya.  We cannot calmly sit by and watch as Russian fascism raises its head. The day before yesterday we saw brainwashing in Russia and the persecution of the opposition. Yesterday there was xenophobic hysteria, police raids and the deportation of people of the “wrong nationality”. Today they kill people who dared to tell the Kremlin leaders the truth about their crimes”, the statement from the initiative group reads.  The group is made up of people who personally knew the journalist and were involved in translating and publishing her book “Second Chechnya” in Ukraine.

The memorial gathering will begin on Tuesday, 10 October at 13.00 in Kyiv at: Povitroflotsky Prospekt, 27.

Candles will be lit in Anna Politkovskaya’s memory and her texts read aloud.
