Irina Kazulina, wife of imprisoned Belarusian former presidential candidate Aleksandr Kazulin has called on the UN to help free her husband and other political prisoners in Belarus

28.11.2006
On behalf of her husband, she asks that at least one of the member states of the G8 raises the issue of Belarus in the UN Security Council

Irina Kazulina, wife of imprisoned Belarusian opposition leader Aleksandr Kazulin has called on the United Nations to help free her husband and other political prisoners in Belarus. Her letter reads:

“People of the world,

Today the life of my husband Aleksandr Kazulin depends on each of you!

He has been on hunger strike for 39 days now, protesting against the President Lukashenko’s dictatorial and illegitimate regime.  Aleksandr Kazulin is serving a five year sentence for his political convictions.

The country is experiencing a protracted constitutional crisis.  The human rights situation in the country is critical.  The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly on the initiative of the USA, Canada and the EU adopted a resolution on human rights violations in Belarus. I am very grateful for this step forward.

My husband is convinced that only the UN Security Council can influence changes in the country. Belarus is a fully-fledged member of the UN, and must follow decisions of the UN Security Council. For this reason Aleksandr Kazulin is asking that at least one of the countries of the G8 put forward a proposal to raise the issue of Belarus in the UN Security Council.

I call on you today with a desperate plea to do all that you can. Otherwise my husband who dared oppose the dictatorship could DIE.

Say NO to the Belarusian dictator Lukashenko! Help release political prisoners! Save my husband!”
