A statement was issued in Minsk on Saturday, 9 December, by the German Embassy which represents the EU in Belarus.

Aleksandr Kazulin has been on hunger strike since 20 October, demanding that the violation of human rights in Belarus be discussed in the UN Security Council. Members of his family report that his condition is critical.

On Friday the UN Special Expert on Human Rights in Belarus expressed grave concern over the state of health of the opposition politician. In the statement, UN Representative Adrian Severin calls on the Belarusian authorities to guarantee Aleksandr Kazulin proper medical care, access to his relatives, lawyers and independent observers.

On Friday around 500 people declared a hunger strike to show solidarity with the imprisoned politician.

In July Aleksandr Kazulin was sentenced to five and a half years imprisonment on charges of hooliganism and organizing disturbances.
