The Alliance “Human Rights Defenders of Uzbekistan” has accused the Turkmenistan Security Service of involvement in the disappearance of Nurberdi Nurmamedov who has disappeared after attempts by the Unioon of Democratic Forces to put him forward as candidate for the coming elections.

The leader of the opposition party “Unity” left his home in Ashgabat on Saturday and has not been seen since.
The Union of Democratic Forces of Turkmenistan which is in exile put forward the opposition leader as candidate for President of the country. He was not, however, registered by the National Council, the body authorized to approve candidates and fix the date of elections for head of state.
The life President of Turkmenistan Sapamurat Niyazov who had ruled the country for more than 20 years died last week. The elections for head of state are to be held on 11 February.
